X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, is taking a significant step in its transformation into a video-first platform with the introduction of the X TV app. This new application, which is currently in beta, allows users to access video content directly on their televisions. It’s available on several platforms, including LG TVs, Amazon Fire TV, Google TV, and through the Google Play Store.
The launch of the X TV app aligns with the company’s recent efforts to prioritize video content, following the revelation that four out of five user sessions on X involve video consumption. The platform has seen a 35% annual growth in video views and a 17% increase in time spent on video, statistics that reflect the growing importance of video content in its overall strategy.
By enabling users to watch videos on their TVs, X is expanding the ways in which its content can be consumed, making it easier for users to engage with the platform in a more immersive and convenient way. The app serves as a video delivery system for content already available on X, offering a curated selection of videos upon logging in with an existing X account.
While the app is still in its beta phase, X plans to introduce more features and integrations, including a dedicated Video Tab. This move underscores X's commitment to evolving from a text-based social platform to one that competes directly with other video-heavy platforms like YouTube and TikTok.
