Verizon has confirmed that it has secured its network following a breach linked to the China-affiliated hacking group known as Salt Typhoon. This cyberattack targeted vulnerabilities in telecom infrastructure, including routers and switches, and aimed to provide persistent access to US telecom networks.

The attack, which has been described as one of the most significant telecom hacks in history, reportedly began as early as 2022. It exploited technical weaknesses in cybersecurity tools, allowing attackers to plant malware, extract sensitive data, and monitor communications. The breach even extended to backdoor systems used by telecom firms for law enforcement surveillance, raising concerns about compromised national security .

Verizon and other telecom companies, including AT&T and Lumen, worked with the FBI and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) to contain the breach. Efforts included strengthening firewalls and implementing updated security protocols .

In response, cybersecurity agencies from the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the UK issued joint guidance to address such vulnerabilities. The attack highlights the need for improved defenses against sophisticated cyber threats .

For individuals, experts recommend using encrypted messaging apps, enabling two-factor authentication, and updating device passwords regularly to enhance personal security.
