Blue Origin Confirms New Glenn's Inaugural Launch Set for Late 2024

Blue Origin, the aerospace company founded by Jeff Bezos, has officially announced the launch of its heavy-lift rocket, New Glenn, is scheduled for late 2024. This represents a major step for the company as it prepares to enter the competitive heavy-lift orbital launch market dominated by SpaceX and other industry giants.

A Rocket Designed for the Future

Named after astronaut John Glenn, New Glenn is a reusable, two-stage rocket designed for a variety of missions. Standing 98 meters tall with a massive payload capacity of 45,000 kilograms to low Earth orbit (LEO) and 13,000 kilograms to geostationary transfer orbit (GTO), the rocket is Blue Origin's most ambitious project to date.

The DarkSky-1 Mission

The maiden flight will carry the DarkSky-1 prototype, developed by the U.S. Department of Defense. This payload will test advanced communication arrays, power systems, and in-orbit computing capabilities. DarkSky-1 is part of the U.S. military's efforts to validate cutting-edge space technologies for future missions.

Initially, New Glenn’s first payload was intended to be NASA's EscaPADE mission to study Mars's atmosphere. However, delays in rocket readiness pushed that mission to 2025. The DarkSky-1 mission will serve as a critical milestone in achieving certification for National Security Space Launch missions, further opening avenues for government contracts.

Blue Origin’s Competitive Edge

Blue Origin’s entry into the heavy-lift launch market sets the stage for direct competition with SpaceX's Falcon Heavy and Starship rockets. The reusability of New Glenn’s first stage is a key feature designed to reduce costs and improve turnaround times. The rocket also has commercial ambitions, aiming to support satellite constellations, deep space exploration, and crewed missions.

As part of its broader vision, Blue Origin hopes New Glenn will contribute to enabling millions of people to live and work in space. “The lessons learned from this launch will bring us closer to a future where space is accessible to all,” said Paul Ebertz, Senior Vice President of Blue Origin’s In-Space Systems.

Milestone for Blue Origin

With its suborbital New Shepard rocket already achieving success in tourism and scientific payloads, New Glenn represents the next leap in Blue Origin’s journey. This launch will test not only the rocket’s capability but also Blue Origin’s ability to meet the demands of government and commercial customers alike.

The countdown to late 2024 has begun, and all eyes are on Blue Origin as it prepares to demonstrate its readiness for a future where space becomes a domain of sustained human activity.
